Sheikh Sharif’s Hypocrisy

“If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then
it probably is a duck.”  Indiana poet, James Whitcomb Riley (1849-1916)

Recently, the rumors of the relationship between the TFG’s President Sheikh Sharif and al-Shabaab, the very organization, which seems to be fighting to topple his weak administration, have become the talking points at the Somali gatherings, both abroad and inside Somalia. And this sentiment is as a result of Sharif’s cozy relationship with his confidantes within his administration whom also happened to be senior members of Alshabab/Al-itihad. In doing so, Sheikh Sharif alienated Ahl-Sunnah Wal-Jameeca, which appears to be the only organization fighting al-Shabaab wholeheartedly.

Sheikh Sharif and Indhacadde
Sheikh Sharif has a strong but clandestine relationship with Alshabaab. Given their historic alliance, Sheikh Sharif’s group of Al-Islaah and Alshabaab, one can not take such revelations lightly. Prior to the rise of the extremist groups, including Sheikh Sharif’s, to power in Somali, al-Islaah was part of the greater Wahabi family of which al-Shabaab, al-Itihaad, al-Takfiir, al-Ictisaam, and others all adhere to. Sheikh Sharif’s Minister of Internal Affairs Abdulqadir Ali Omar was and remains to be a senior member of al-Itihad al-Islami. Not to mention Maxamed Maxmaud Indhacadde’s extraordinary relationship with Sheikh Sharif. Indhacadde, a former high defense official in and right hand of Sheikh Sharif  has publicly called Mukhtaaq Roobow (Abuu Mansuur), al-Shabaab’s number two man, his friend. He went on to say “we are in a close contact with Abuu Mansuur.”

Al-Shabaab emerged from two known previous Somali extremist groups, the Islamic Union (Al-Ittihad al-Islamiya, IU) and the Islamic Courts Union (Al-Islah al-Islamiya). During the tenure of Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, the secular President of the last administration, Sheikh Sharif, then, the leader of Al-Islaah and Hassan Dahir Aways, the leader of Al-Ittihad, vowed to oust the Transitional Federal Government lead by what they called “infidel” individuals.  Like al-Shabaab today, Sheikh Sharif had called President Yusuf “infidel” for his cooperation with the AMISON troops that was vital for the security of the presidential palace, and thus, the existence of his administration. A crime, in the eyes of the extremists, Sheikh Sharif is guilty of, today.

In a BBC Somali Service interview, Awliyo, the spokesman for Ahlu-sunnah Wal Jameeca in Europe, a group that fights al-Shabaab in Mogadishu and Central Somalia, accused Sheikh Sharif for maintaining a strong relationship with al-Shabaab ever since their public divorce prior to the installment of Sheikh Sharif to his current post.  Awliyo cited Sheikh Sheriff’s failure to fulfill the agreement his administration signed with Ahlusunna in Addis Ababa. Furthermore, Awliyo stated the relationship between the former allies is as strong as it has ever been. “Sheikh Sharif provided al-Shabaab weapons, funding, and other military equipment”, Awliyo levels against Sheikh Sharif.

In conclusion, Sheikh Sharif’s clandestine collaboration with al-Shabaab and other terrorist organizations like Hizb Islam will surely sink the whole nation into a sea of unprecedented violence and chaos. The best way to avert such catastrophe is to force Sheikh Sharif out of power in order to make room for a competent and strong leader whose priority will be to, not just entertain the world by playing hide-and-seek with al-Shabaab and Hizb Islam, but to obliterate them once and for all. Only then, will Somalia be able to rejoin the world communities and reclaim its pride and standing among them. While exposing the truth about such unholy and hidden alliance between Sheikh Sharif and al-Shabaab is the first step of the revolution that dismantles their common Wahabi ideology, the day of their demise is around the corner.
