Sunday, June 20, 2010
SANA'A, June 20 (Saba) – Yemen celebrated on Sunday with the rest of the world countries the World Refugee Day, which falls on June 20 of each year.

The UNHCR in Sana'a organized an artistic and rhetorical celebration under the motto "Home", which expressed the plight of refugees around the world, who have been forced to flee their countries and leave their homes because of conflict and oppression.

In the celebration, the UNHCR's Representative in Yemen, Claire Bourgeois, pointed the importance of this event, which marks the rights of refugees in the world, emphasizing the significant of local partnership to meet the needs of refugees effectively and to enable them to improve their living conditions, access to basic services and rely on themselves.

She reviewed the UNHCR's activities and programs in the field of support for the refugees in Yemen in the various social, educational and healthcare areas.

"We bear the responsibility to address misconceptions about refugees, which undermine their legitimate aspirations, because people do not choose to be refugees of their own volition, as no one can choose to be deprived of his homeland", she said.

The UNHCR's representative voiced her appreciation for the humanitarian efforts exerted by the Yemeni government in the field of harboring Somali refugees and giving them the refugee status since they were forced to leave their homes by conflict and violence.

The government's statistics indicate that the number of refugees in Yemen amounts to over 800 thousand refugees, while the UNHCR's statistcs show that the number of refugees in Yemen does not exceed 175 thousand.
